Our advice on when is the time to renew your double-glazing windows.
It may be irritating, but double glazing failure is something that occurs.
It’s not uncommon for someone to look out one day with a clear view, only to wake up the next day and find that there is condensation permanently etched onto the inner glass.
In our other helpful posts, we have talked about using condensation on the windows and the reasons why the windows do fail.
If you're seeing condensation on the interior side of your window, it's pretty much an indication that the window has already failed or come to the end of its normal operational period. Because a double glazed window generally has an average lifespan of 20 to 35 years.
However, in this case, the life span of the double-glazed unit does not change but the pace at which it is deteriorating may vary based on different variables.
If windows are failing too soon, too fast, or too frequently, variables may help explain the reason why that is happening to you.
A double glazing unit fails for quite a few reasons and one set of reasons is Solar Pumping. Solar Pumping refers to warming and cooling of air in the cavity of your window as the seasons change. For example, in summer the heated air inside your window pushes the glass panes outward while the opposite happens in winter.
This process of expansion and contraction goes on for years which causes the window’s seal to weaken or puncture and this is the point where your window is said to have failed and condensation is able to sneak in.
Property location is believed to be major variable contributing to an increase in Solar Pumping.
But the good news is that for a reason of solar pumping, property location is not a significant factor. Thus, when we say property location is a reason for condensation in a window unit, it does not mean just because you are living in Glasgow that your window is going to fail sooner than somebody else living in the coastal areas of Scotland.
Rather what we do say is that for a house which is located in an area that has more sunlight than other regions, the windows are subjected to more direct sunlight for longer periods of time, and this is an important factor that will determine the lifetime of your double-glazed window.
An additional variable which is to be discussed is the location of the window on your property.
So taking what we know from Solar Pumping and also, with the position of the house determining the amount of direct sunlight upon the windows, the location of the window on the property is of great importance too.
Suppose an owner has spent huge amount of money to install new double glazing windows for the entire house, with Solar Pumping being the cause for the window’s failure, it is more likely than not that the south-facing windows are the ones that shall fail first.
This becomes naturally possible because the south-facing windows on your property will experience the most direct sunlight. On top of that, if you have windows on the ground floor, first floor, second floor, or higher, they are even more at risk because they are further up on your property and are therefore more expected to be less obstructed from the sun.
As a result of the insulating effect of a double glazing unit, it is fairly possible that at some stage during the time you reside at the premises, you will have a failed unit attached to your property.
